Chapter Five

The week dragged at a snail’s pace, leaving me with piles of work and not much free time. At night I was constantly phoning or texting Jay, meaning we were almost always talking. He’d also made it a habit of coming to see me in the library in the mornings if I didn’t go to the staff room when I arrived at school. It was also becoming a lot more obvious to other staff members. A few of the nosiest were asking Claire if there was something happening between me and the “new teacher.”

It was a position that I’d never been in before, one that was exciting, yet still, extremely nerve-racking and foreign. I was flying blind, not knowing exactly what I was doing, while simply hoping for the best outcome.

When Friday finally rolled around, I felt completely drained from the week and was ready for an early night. However, it appeared that Jay had other plans.

“Hey, are you busy tonight?” His presence was only made by his voice, startling me in the dead-silent library.

“No, I’m free. Why?” I asked, glancing up as he walked into the empty room.

“I thought that we could maybe hang out at my place or something. We could order food in and watch a movie?” he said.

“Yeah, that sounds great!” So much for an early night, I thought. Admittedly, this did sound a lot better.

“Okay, I’ll text you my address,” he smiled, checking his watch. “Sorry I’ve got to run, I have a meeting in about five minutes.”

“I’ll see you tonight then,” I said. He nodded before turning on his heels and rushing to his meeting. No matter how hard I tried, the smile on my face refused to move. I couldn’t help feeling elated by this advance. I had been curious for a while as to what happened after a first date. I’d never made it this far with a guy to find out.

I knew it had only been a week of knowing Jay, but we’d been speaking non-stop every day and it felt like much longer than that. Scenarios of tonight began to play in my head. What if it was more than just a movie? It was bound to be, and I began to feel a lot more comfortable with the thought of that. I’d learned a lot about myself as well as Jay over this week. He was patient and caring, he wouldn’t force anything, and I felt safe with him. So what if we were moving fast?

I was becoming more invested in him, the same as he was with me. My feelings were definitely becoming stronger too.

The ear piercingly loud bell signaled the end of the day. It seemed to be even louder in the quiet of the library, echoing around the stacked shelves, yet also bouncing off of the tall walls. I looked up from my desk, seeing that nobody was there to ask to leave. Sighing, I logged off the computer and gathered my various things.

Once out in the parking lot, I saw Jay climbing into his impressive car.
